About Nitrosonic is a full service audio recording facility located in Lexington, KY. We've been operational for almost three years now and just recently opened our new facility located on Loudon Ave in downtown Lexington (the old Stuffs building for those who have been around long enough to remember). The building itself is about 2700 square feet with the recording studio taking up 1700 square feet of the space. To begin with we completely gutted the building so that we could take advantage of state of the art acoustical design and sound proofing techniques. Here are just a few of the design consideration incorporated into the new space:
No parallel walls and ceilings.
Full elecrtical update, outlets star-grounded back to main electrical panel.
Acoustical door-bottom seals for all doors for maximum isolation.
Two heat-pumps isolating control room and lounge from the tracking rooms.
All high-voltage lighting to prevent any transformer hum.
Air gaps and sound locks between all rooms for isolation.
Soffit mounted speaker system for highly accurate monitoring.
Front-reflecting back-absorbing control room design.
Instrument and speaker connections to every room for easy cabinet isolation.
Fully patchable XLR Mogami cable system wired to every room.
Large tracking room with 4 gobos for isolation when tracking.
All rooms visible through custom double pane windows for band tracking.
Drum booth has 8 foot doors which can be opened for a large room sound.
Three Rooms utilizing wood, concrete and carpet for maximum flexibility.
The primary goal when designing the new space was to build a studio that would sound amazing and provide a space for maximum creativity. A space where an entire band could perform live so that overdubbing large numbers of tracks would not be necessary. We also put a lot of thought into the workflow of the studio so that more time was spent recording music and less time on setting up mics and running cords. The end result is a space where bands and muscicians can create very high quality recordings in a reasonable amount of time at a very fair, competitive rate.
In addition to the great recording space, clients that record with us will have access to top of the line microphones, preamps and outboard gear. We pride ourselves on a sound that brings together the great qualities of modern solid-state clarity and punch with vintage classic tube warmth. Tracking a band using modern API preamps for a powerful drum sound along with the analog warmth of a tube preamp like our vintage Ampex 301 on guitars and vocals truely provides that best of both worlds. For bands looking for more distortion and a lo-fi sound, we can use outboard gear like our analog Distressors to add warmth and compression to a vocal or guitar track to give it just the right amount of overdrive. For someone wishing to produce an exceptional sounding string instrument recording, we can take advantage of something like a high quality figure-8 pattern Royer ribbon mic paired with a modern Universal Audio tube preamp to capture all the subtle details of the instrument along with the resonance of a great sounding room.
We believe that there is no one mic for the job. That's why we utilize a wide variety of dynamic, ribbon and condensor mics to provide a large enough audio pallet to meet any recording need. We also have a comfortable lounge with cable TV and would like to eventually build out an apartment and recreation area to accommodate overnight guest.
